When Hunter Marine celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2012, the builder was undergoing a massive structural and ownership transition 2. Rescued from the financial doldrums of the Great Recession by David Marlow of Marlow Yachts, the Floridabased manufacturer emerged with a new name—MarlowHunter—and an ambitious new flagship design: the Hunter 402 (marketed broadly as the MarlowHunter 40). Created by Glenn Henderson, who had long collaborated with Hunter’s inhouse engineering team, this 40foot sloop was rushed from drawing board to physical production in a remarkable eight weeks, debuting to immediate critical acclaim at the 2012 United Sates Sailboat Show in Annapolis. Far from a rushed stopgap, the design represented a modernization of Hunter’s highvolume coastal cruising ethos, blending the builder’s signature userfriendly features with structural upgrades inspired by Marlow’s luxury powerboat heritage.
