Hallberg-Rassy 312 Buyer's Guide
Shopping the brokerage market for a Hallberg-Rassy 312 means choosing among 690 boats built between 1979 and 1993 across the Mark I and Mark II configurations. The two marks share hull, rig, and keel, but differ in superstructure layout and accommodation — differences that matter more than year of build when matching a boat to your plans. Most examples on the used market carry the kind of equipment fit that reflects both the original spec and decades of owner investment.
Layouts on the Used Market
The Mark I, built until 1986 and recognisable by portlights in the blue hull stripe, came with or without a quarter berth; without it, the boat gained an extra cockpit locker on starboard. From 1986 the Mk II moved the larger windows up into the superstructure, shifted the whole superstructure and cockpit aft for a few extra saloon centimetres, and raised the coachroof. The Mk II was built only with quarter berth, separated the toilet compartment from the full beam of the older layout, fitted a shower basin, and channelled wet-room waste into a one-metre-deep bilge sump. A dog bunk at the navigation area became standard on Mk-II boats after being an extra. Forward berths run 200 cm in the oldest boats down to 190 cm in the latest, and the saloon itself holds longitudinal sofas to port with an L-shaped settee to starboard around a centreline folding table. The interior is matte lacquered mahogany with formica surfaces in the galley and nav station.
Equipment and Common Upgrades
Teak decks, chartplotter, heating, and autopilot are commonly fitted to used Hallberg-Rassy 312s. Solar, spinnaker, hot water, life raft, inverter, and bow thruster are often seen. Less commonly found are bimini, AIS, EPIRB, asymmetric spinnaker, and dinghy davits, which tend to appear as owner upgrades. Original equipment worth confirming includes the fixed centre-opening windscreen, two dorade boxes on the superstructure, a large foredeck anchor locker, and — on the test-boat specification record — a port-side galley with seaworthy double sink, semi-cardanically suspended gas cooker with oven, and top-loading fridge. The engine began as the Volvo Penta MD 11/110S and later became the 2003S/120 B.
What to Inspect
The one documented construction weakness is the teak deck, which was not fully bonded and — depending on degree of use — will sooner or later become a problem area. Any teak-coved example should be closely checked for bond failure and hidden rot at the interface. Beyond that, verify which mark you are looking at: the Mk II's wet-room waste is designed to run into the one-metre-deep bilge sump, so confirm that drainage path is clear and the sump sound. The hull shell and rigging were never touched across the model upgrade, so structural age is consistent regardless of mark.
Availability and Buyer's Takeaway
Typical markets for the Hallberg-Rassy 312 are Germany, Netherlands, Denmark, United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Sweden. When inspecting a candidate, the short checklist is: confirm Mark I versus Mk II by window location and saloon length; probe the teak deck bond line for failure; check the bilge sump and wet-room drainage on Mk II; verify engine variant and galley equipment; and assess forward berth length against your crew size.
