The Rustler 31 is a compact, superbly built yacht designed by Kim Holman around 1964/65, with early hulls from Anstey Yachts under Russell Anstey — the name itself a play on his own. Generally regarded as a larger iteration of Holman's earlier Twister, the 31 went on to share with that boat and the later Rustler 36 an excellent reputation for seaworthiness and allweather speed. At 9.58 metres overall with a 7.32 metre waterline, 2.74 metre beam and 5,600 lb of ballast inside a 12,770 lb displacement, she is a longkeel classic sought after both as a fast coastal cruiser and as a longdistance passagemaker.

Rustler 31 Buyer's Guide

Shopping the used Rustler 31 means taking on a long-keel classic designed by Kim Holman around 1964/65 and built by various yards including Maltings, Orion and Ansteys, with quite a number of bare hulls sold to amateur and other builders over the years. Many have covered a lot of miles, and good examples command high prices, so the buyer is weighing proven seaworthiness against the reality that some inevitably are a little tired. She remains sought after both as a fast coastal cruiser and as a long-distance passage-maker.

Layouts on the Used Market

Most boats show a snug but straightforward cabin layout with two cabins and four to five berths, the two 1.88m settees making good sea berths with leecloths. Many early examples had pilot or pipe cot berths above and outboard of the saloon settees for racing crews; many of those have since been converted into lockers. The version with a quarterberth behind the chart table is the one to look for. Most saloon tables hinge down from the forward bulkhead, though different options appear, and a large hanging locker opposite the heads is found on some boats. The galley and heads are basic and small, few boats have pressurised hot water, and there is no room for a shower unless it is in the cockpit. The cockpit is long but narrow, and a wheel reduces usable space whereas a hinged tiller frees it.

Equipment and Common Upgrades

On the used fleet, an autopilot is commonly fitted. Solar, spinnaker, dodger and life raft are often seen. Less commonly, as owner upgrades, you may find heating, asymmetric spinnaker, furling main, electric winches, bimini, teak decks or chartplotter. It is not uncommon to find vane gear self-steering on these boats. Stout mooring cleats and fairleads are present but none amidships; an extra turning block on the genoa track can help with solo docking.

What to Inspect

The documented irritant is the anchor-chain locker arrangement: on many Rustler 31s the chain is fed down a pipe into a locker below the forward berths, and the chain piles up and blocks the pipe when recovering the anchor, requiring someone to go below and tip it. Beyond that, because some boats are inevitably a little tired after many miles, inspect for general wear consistent with long service. Note the lack of amidships cleats as a practical limitation rather than a fault, and confirm the long-keel hull's condition given it provides the flat base for drying out and that the boat is cumbersome when motoring astern.

Availability and Buyer's Takeaway

Typical markets for the Rustler 31 are the United Kingdom, Netherlands and France. For the buyer, the short checklist is: seek the quarterberth-behind-chart-table version; prefer a tiller over a wheel for cockpit space; verify the anchor-chain pipe does not block easily; confirm vane gear or autopilot if short-handed use is intended; and budget for a boat that may be a little tired but will not let you down on long passages.
