The original and 2-34 show twin quarterberths aft with the galley to starboard and dinette to port; the 3-34 instead places the galley aft to port with a quarterberth and chart table to starboard and a settee opposite the dinette. Both share forward V-berths and a head between cabins, but the later boat adds more creature comforts and a larger water tank. Early interiors are varnished mahogany — lighter but higher-maintenance — while later boats went to oiled teak.

The most consequential factory-era change is that wheel steering is standard on the 3-34 from 1976 on, whereas earlier boats often received it as a refit that required moving the mainsheet on long-boom versions.

What to Inspect

A number of owners report the main bulkhead delaminating from leaking chainplates, and Practical Sailor notes that because this is potentially serious any Cal 34 should be surveyed for leakage at the chainplates and for chainplate fatigue cracks anchor. Check the deck around the mast step and the fiberglass keel molding — a hollow ring when tapped with a mallet signals a loose ballast casting from a hard grounding. The distinctive blue sheerstrake is usually faded unless repainted, deck gelcoat crazing is very common, and the lack of stanchion backing plates promotes localized crazing; aluminum-framed cabin ports leak, and older gate valves on through-hulls should be replaced. A worn fiberglass bearing tube at the rudder stock produces anchor loose steering on some examples, and the two small stock cockpit scuppers are inadequate for the large cockpit. The Atomic Four gas engine sits under the cockpit on a V-drive some owners have trouble with; mid-1970s diesels include Farymann units whose parts are effectively unobtainable.
