Design and Construction

The Swan 66 S is a monohull of glassfibre construction, built predominantly of vinylester glassfibre over a PVC core with carbon fibre reinforcement and wooden trim. The hull carries a slightly raked stem and a reverse transom fitted with a drop-down tailgate swimming platform, while an internally mounted spade-type rudder is controlled by dual carbon fibre wheels. The same hull design underpins both the S and FD models, but the S is distinguished by its high coach house and flush deck forward of the mast, where the deck runs true to the stem before rising into a saloon deckhouse that blends seamlessly into one large unitary cockpit occupying the back third of the boat anchor. This continuous deck-and-cockpit volume is a defining spatial gesture of the design.

Rig and Sail Plan

Frers gave the Swan 66 S a masthead sloop rig with a keel-stepped carbon fibre mast, three sets of swept spreaders, and stainless steel rod standing rigging. The numbers are substantial: a 90.22-foot I foretriangle height, 24.44-foot J base, an 82.68-foot mainsail luff, and a 24.93-foot foot yield a 1,309-square-foot mainsail and a 1,038-square-foot jib/genoa area for an upwind sail area of 2,347 square feet. Accommodations

Below, the saloon itself is not raised, preserving headroom geometry different from a typical raised-saloon layout, and the large saloon windows admit plenty of light though they do little to open the view outward unless the occupant is tall. Interior trim runs more Euro contemporary, with less teak and more open stark-white surfaces than older Swan interiors. A typical layout sleeps six in four cabins: a double berth forward, a pair of midship rooms with one single and one double, and an aft starboard single, plus two L-shaped settees in the main cabin. The galley sits port-side aft of the companionway as a C-shaped workspace fitted with a four-burner cooktop, an ice chest, and a twin-basin sink, while the navigation station is to starboard in the main cabin. Four heads serve the four cabins, and a dinghy garage is tucked under the cockpit.

Known Issues

The principal cautions for an owner are inherent to the configuration rather than to fault: the 10.5-foot standard keel draft limits shallow access, and the complex unitary cockpit and drop-down transom mechanism warrant routine inspection as with any moving structural element on a 66-foot yacht.

Refits and Ownership

Ownership of a Swan 66 S centers on a Yanmar 163 hp diesel for docking and maneuvering, backed by a 211-gallon fuel tank and a 264-gallon fresh water tank. The carbon rig and vinylester/PVC-core hull are modern enough that major refits tend toward systems and canvas rather than structural rebuilds.
