Design and Construction
Soto Acebal curated the water lines, hull lines and sail plan, producing modern hull geometry with bow buoyancy carried by a small chine that fades down the topsides and an extremely round stern opening to twin rudder blades anchor. Deck and hull are taken from female moulds; the yard builds the sandwich from closed-cell PVC, with the inner skin resin infused and the structure bonded using vinylester from an epoxy base and unidirectional centreline reinforcements. Foam density in the bow sections of the hull bottom runs to 130 kg per cubic metre over a 35 mm thickness to resist wave impact. Solaris resin-bonds furnishings, bulkheads and chainplates to the structure, and the build keeps carpentry within nautical tradition.
Rig and Handling
The aluminium mast and boom carry 250 sq. m of sail on a 100% bow triangle, with a 138 sq. m mainsail and a 102 sq. m 90% jib. Standing rigging is of rod. The mainsheet leads to a central point operated by an electric pedestal winch, and the deck presents a clear bow interrupted only by the self-tacking jib track. Twin independent steering systems give redundancy, their axes linked by a tie rod so either wheel drives both rudders. A large cockpit spans the full beam with off-axis starboard entry that leaves the port cockpit table free; that table lifts aft to form a sunbathing platform. The engine compartment sits under the saloon sole, reached by a sealed, neoprene-hatched opening and wrapped in a 45 mm acoustic barrier, while the saloon soleboards themselves lift for full machinery access and the hinging aft steps give quick secondary entry.
Accommodations
The raised-saloon layout resolves into three interior plans, each holding a huge dinette with a port settee and table, a linear opposite settee, and a forward-facing chart table with stowage. Lorenzo Argento limited live oak and introduced more white surfaces to soften forms and lift brightness, wrapping the saloon and banquettes in low, radiused paneling; some decorative panels open via a button set on the horizontal plane. Free spaces become lockers and all corners are rounded. The first plan places a forward master with island berth, desk and private shower, then a double cabin and head aft, an L-shaped galley to port and a starboard double, with the crew cabin and its own head forward of the aft galley. The second plan shrinks the master to gain two aft doubles, the starboard one with bunks. The third puts the crew cabin forward of the owner's stateroom and drops the galley to the mast foot. The first three hulls delivered with owner cabins forward and galley and crew aft, the aft crew space reached by its own hatch. A fold-down bridge from the aft tender garage forms a sea terrace, and the garage itself takes a 4 m tender.
Known Issues
The bow foam density is raised specifically for wave-impact resistance, a designed specification of the hull bottom. The engine hatch carries neoprene seals and a 45 mm barrier whose full description is cut off in the source, leaving exact closure detail unstated by the evidence.
The Verdict
The Solaris 74 RS is a thoroughly modern ocean cruiser that pairs Soto Acebal's performance hull with Argento's calm, bright interior and a genuinely clever use of volume. Twin rudders, a clear foredeck and central mainsheet mark her as a serious passagemaker, while the semi-custom layouts let an owner choose between guest count and owner privacy without sacrificing the shared dinette and machinery access.
