The Salona 46 arrived in 2020 as the new flagship performance cruiser from Salona Yachts, replacing the Salona 44 and drawn by J&J Design. At 13.50m (44ft 4in) on the waterlineextended hull, she is a thoroughly modern take on the performance cruiser: a deep Tbulb keel, a highfractional rig carrying a minimaloverlap headsail, twin wheels, and large lowlevel hull ports, yet she stops short of the twinrudder and chinedtransom fashion seen on many rivals.

Salona 46 Buyer's Guide

The Salona 46 entered production in 2020 as Salona Yachts' flagship performance cruiser, succeeding the Salona 44, and used Salona 46s are contemporary boats with the structural and rigging character of a modern J&J Design hull. Shopping one means weighing the standard performance-cruiser package against the owner-selected extras that differentiate individual boats.

Layouts on the Used Market

Every Salona 46 carries twin double aft cabins as standard, with the centerline space between them available as a generator room rather than a third berth, so buyers should confirm which configuration a given hull has. The interior is finished in light European oak unless a previous owner paid for alternative timber, and apart from the head liners the below-deck spaces use no moulded interiors, which keeps hull access straightforward. A watertight bulkhead at bow and stern brackets the accommodation, and the companionway steps have bevelled edges, though the deck non-slip is on the gentle side.

Equipment and Common Upgrades

The most consequential choices on a used 46 cluster around power and energy. The standard 57hp Yanmar with saildrive and folding prop is sometimes joined by the Oceanvolt electric propulsion system developed in Finland with hydro-generation under sail, and a retractable bow-thruster appeared on the test boat as a notable extra. Sail-handling hardware is serious: Lewmar 50s on the coamings for the headsail, Lewmar 45 self-tailers for the German-style mainsheet, and a coachroof pair of 45s where the port main halyard is often an electric upgrade. Rigging runs through a keel-stepped Seldén mast with a hydraulic or cascade Dyneema backstay tensioner. Comfort items include a removable stainless-framed saloon table that doubles as a brace and a deck locker sized for plenty of ground tackle and downwind sails.

What to Inspect

The defining structural feature is the stainless steel frame bonded inside the hull, through whose central section the keel is bolted with ten M30 bolts — confirming those bolts and the frame's condition is central to any survey stainless steel frame bonded to the inside of the hull. Moulded reinforcement runs from that frame up the topsides to the chainplates, and the watertight bulkheads at bow and stern should be verified intact. Because the below-deck areas use no moulded liners except in the heads, a buyer can inspect the hull interior directly. The deck non-slip is gentle under-foot, so check for wear or added traction in high-traffic areas.

Availability and Buyer's Takeaway

The Salona 46 is typically found on the used market in France. For a buyer, the short checklist is: confirm keel-bolt and frame integrity, decide between diesel and Oceanvolt electric drive, verify the aft-cabin versus generator-room layout, and assess whether the electric halyard winch and bow-thruster extras matter to your sailing. She is a modern, well-framed performance cruiser whose used examples reward a survey focused on the bonded structure.
