Buying a used Salona: one structural formula, three design eras

A used Salona is not one design revisited over and over - it's a single structural formula, a stainless-steel frame bonded inside a vacuum-infused, vinyl-ester hull, carried through three different design-house eras and a size range that runs from compact cruiser-racers to a flagship-class 60-footer. Because that structural formula holds steady across the whole range, condition and era of build tell a buyer more than which specific model badge is on the transom.

Which era to target

The clearest fault line in the range falls at 2016, when Salona's shipyard brought in Cossutti Yacht Design for the first time to create the Salona 380 - itself a replacement for the earlier, J&J-designed Salona 38, which had replaced the Salona 37 back in 2011. Yachting Monthly, reviewing the 380, found its interior finish and attention to detail had substantially improved over earlier Salona models, so a buyer weighing a pre-380 boat against a 380-or-later one should expect that same gap in finish. The 380's own successor, the Salona 39, followed in 2022 under the same design partnership. Salona's flagship also changed hands in 2020: the 46, also known as the 460, took over from the 44 and brought an electric-propulsion option to the top of the range - worth confirming on the specific boat you're considering, since it wasn't standard equipment. The Ker-designed Salona 60, built in 2013, sits above all of this in a size class of its own.

What to inspect across the range

Two things are worth checking regardless of which model or era you're looking at. First, Salona's stainless-steel internal frame - the structure tying keel, mast and shroud loads together on effectively every model the yard has built - is worth having a surveyor look at closely around the keel bolts and chainplate attachment points, since the boat's structural integrity runs through that single frame rather than the hull skin alone. Second, non-skid coverage: Cruising World's testers wanted the Salona 45's cabin-top pattern extended further inboard of the rails, and Yachting Monthly separately called for more non-slip on the Salona 380's deck - different models, same recurring complaint, worth confirming for grip and wear on any used Salona you're inspecting.

Within that shared structure, the range splits more by size and design era than by any single defining feature: the mainstream, J&J-designed cruiser-racers cover the bulk of the lineup, the Cossutti-designed 380/39 pairing represents the newer and better-finished generation, and the Ker-designed 60 and the electric-optioned 46 sit apart as the range's largest and newest flagships. The full model directory on this page breaks the lineup down by size so you can compare boats within whichever band fits how you plan to sail.
