Introduced in 1981, the Pearson 36 Cutter represents a rare, performanceoriented evolution of one of the most successful cruising designs of its era. Designed by William H. Shaw, Pearson Yachts’ chief naval architect and a former student of the legendary firm Sparkman & Stephens, the model was conceived as a highly capable, easily managed offshore passagemaker. Though often confused with its highly popular sibling, the Pearson 365, the 36 Cutter—informally referred to by owners and class associations as the Pearson 367—features a distinct underbody, a taller rig, and a refined interior designed to address the weatherly limitations of the earlier ketch. Built in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, during a brief production run from 1981 to 1982, only 49 hulls were completed before the yard pivoted to other models. This limited production run has elevated the boat to a cultclassic status among cruisers who value classic American build quality, robust offshore scantlings, and shorthanded ease of use.
