Lagoon 52 Buyer's Guide
Shopping the brokerage market for a Lagoon 52 means weighing a 2012-origin fourth-generation cruising catamaran that saw a SporTop version without flybridge become available from 2016 and was only just out of production at the time of writing. Used Lagoon 52s from ex-charter programs are common, and the boat's several alternate layouts make it as plausible a luxurious charter craft as a private voyager for two couples or a family.
Layouts on the Used Market
Charter four-cabin layouts are the more common on the used market, but both are available. In the four-cabin arrangement, pleasant double-berth accommodations forward carry their own head compartments and showers, while the two aft cabins qualify as owner's or VIP quarters — a big bright starboard space with glass-walled shower and sink, and a port cabin with direct cockpit entry. The saloon merges with the cockpit through big sliding doors, and a central nav station with panoramic view anchors the interior; a large dining table and well-equipped galley complete the plan. The SporTop version without flybridge, available from 2016, trades the upper station for weight savings and less windage.
Equipment and Common Upgrades
On the used market, chartplotter, electric winches, inverter, watermaker, air conditioning, bimini, autopilot, and solar are commonly fitted. Often-seen additions include radar, teak decks, AIS, cockpit shower, freezer, life raft, swim platform, dinghy davits, self-tacking jib, bow thruster, and washing machine. Less common owner upgrades range from hot water and heating to code zero, lithium batteries, asymmetric or symmetric spinnaker, and starlink. The standard boat carried a self-tacking jib of 59 square meters and optional square-top mainsail of 107 square meters, with an optional Code 0 of 154 square meters extending versatility for downwind work.
What to Inspect
Documented known issues are limited but worth a look. Testers found the helm response was a bit vague, which can make holding the boat's best angle harder; confirm autopilot and manual steering feel on a sea trial. The motion in short 5–7 foot seas was lively, so inspect structural bulkheads and the reinforced grid for stress. With bridge clearance over 89 feet from waterline to truck, the boat cannot clear standard 65-foot highway bridges — verify any inland transit history. Otherwise, the builder provided good access to engines and systems, so confirm the twin 54hp Yanmar saildrives, plumbing, and electrical remain serviceable.
Availability and Buyer's Takeaway
Typical markets for the Lagoon 52 include Croatia, Greece, United States, France, Grenada, and Bahamas. For a buyer, the checklist is short: confirm layout (four-cabin charter common, others available), verify fitted equipment tier against commonly fitted and often-seen gear, sea-trial for vague helm and lively motion, and check bridge clearance limits against any planned inland route. A well-kept example remains a devilishly seductive second-hand voyager.
