Hanse 411 Buyer's Guide
The Hanse 411 is a 40-foot Judel/Vrolijk-designed monohull built by Yachtzentrum Greifswald GmbH between 2001 and 2006, and on the used market it presents as a configurable coastal cruiser-racer with several interior arrangements and a strong set of factory or owner-fitted equipment. Because ex-charter examples are common and the model was offered with numerous below-decks layouts, buyers should look carefully at how a given boat was used and modified before judging condition.
Layouts on the Used Market
Owner three-cabin layouts are the more common on the used market, but both are available, and ex-charter examples are common. The 411 was sold with numerous interior layouts — 4 berths standard, with 6 or 8 berth options — and the test boat showed a large double berth forward with a curved dressing table to starboard plus a useful aft storage locker that could be modified for another cabin or equipment. An additional head and shower combination forward was a factory option. The saloon height is 2.00 m, and the removable headliner opens electrical access via a fold-down panel regardless of layout.
Equipment and Common Upgrades
On the used market, heating, solar, freezer, chartplotter, lithium batteries, self-tacking jib, electric winches, cockpit shower, radar, autopilot, inverter, asymmetric spinnaker, teak decks, and life raft are commonly fitted. Often-seen additions include wind generator, spinnaker, bow thruster, hot water, bimini, dodger, and AIS. Less commonly, a swim platform or short-handed setup appears as an owner upgrade. The boat itself uses Harken, Spinlock, and Whitlock hardware, a Facnor furling system, and a Whitlock rack-and-pinion steering system; the self-tacking jib and mainsheet traveler controls are led aft as standard.
What to Inspect
Documented construction points warrant specific attention. The hull-deck join being through bolted to the aluminum toe rail and then bonded, and the boat is solid fiberglass to the waterline with balsa core throughout the topsides and deck, so moisture testing of the cored areas is prudent. The two-part, keel system has a lead bottom section through bolted to a cast iron fin section, and in a severe grounding the lead acts as a shock absorber to minimize hull damage — keel-bolt integrity should be confirmed. The mast is deck stepped with a compression post just behind the main bulkhead, and the boat may carry a saildrive transmission, which calls for seal inspection.
