Hanse 411 Buyer's Guide
The Hanse 411 is a 40-foot Judel/Vrolijk design built by the German yard Yachtzentrum Greifswald GmbH between 2001 and 2006, and she remains a recognizable name in the used cruiser-racer market. With a deck-stepped mast, led-aft sail controls, and a self-tacking jib, she was drawn for couples and small crews rather than full race programs, and her two-part lead-and-iron keel gives a measure of grounding forgiveness that matters in brokerage-age boats. Shoppers will find both private and ex-charter examples in circulation.
Layouts on the Used Market
Owner three-cabin arrangements are the more common configuration on the used market, but two-cabin versions are also available, and ex-charter boats turn up frequently. The builder offered numerous below-decks layouts, with a standard four-berth arrangement and six- or eight-berth upgrades possible, and a forward head-and-shower combination could be added. A starboard aft storage locker on some boats was conceived as convertible space for another cabin or extra equipment, so check how a given hull was finished before assuming berth count.

Less common are a swim platform and a simplified short-handed rig setup, which tend to be owner upgrades rather than factory standard.
What to Inspect
The 411 uses balsa core in the topsides and deck over solid fiberglass to the waterline, so survey the core for moisture around deck penetrations and the hull-deck joint, which is through-bolted to the aluminum toe rail and then bonded anchor. The two-part keel joins a lead bottom to a cast-iron fin with through-bolts; in a severe grounding the lead is meant to absorb shock and limit hull damage, so inspect the keel bolt detail and any prior grounding history anchor. Confirm which engine is fitted — examples may show a Yanmar or a Volvo Penta with saildrive — and review the saildrive seal age. The removable headliner and fold-down panel give good electrical access, which should be used during survey.
