Hanse 445 Buyer's Guide
Shopping the brokerage market for a used Hanse 445 means weighing a modern, volume-driven 44-footer against the realities of its production-era layouts and the wear patterns any cruiser accumulates. With Judel/Vrolijk hull lines and Hanse's own interior group work, the boat remains a recognizable presence in used sailing inventories thanks to both private and ex-charter circulation.
Layouts on the Used Market
Owner three-cabin layouts are the more common on the used market, but both are available; ex-charter examples are common. The Hanse 445 was offered with four interior layout models, two of which are just changes in the port side saloon seating. Buyers will find one three-stateroom version with a large centerline double berth forward and one four-stateroom version where the V-berth is split by a centerline bulkhead into two staterooms. Both layouts have two heads with one double berth forward and a separate shower stall to starboard. In the saloon version with two seats to port, the aft seat swivels around for a small chart table. With aft cabins extending far into the stern, expect little volume left for a lazarette regardless of which layout you inspect.
Equipment and Common Upgrades
On the used market the 445 is commonly fitted with a self tacking jib, electric winches, bow thruster, bimini, inverter, autopilot, solar, chartplotter, hot water, watermaker, and heating. Air conditioning, teak decks, life raft, furling main, dodger, swim platform, dinghy davits, cockpit shower, and AIS are often seen. Radar, lithium batteries, spinnaker, and freezer appear as sometimes-or-owner-upgrade items. The standard boat carried a fractional double-spreader rig with tapered aluminum mast, slab-reefed fully battened main, Lewmar 48 AST sheet winches, twin wheels, and a drop-down swim platform with Schaefer tackle and gas strut; the builder also offered its SMS joystick maneuvering system on this model.
What to Inspect
Documented known issues for the 445 are limited, but a few construction and layout facts deserve a close look. The hull is solid hand-laid fiberglass throughout with a vinylester skin to prevent blistering, so confirm the skin's integrity below the waterline and around the saildrive exit, where the canoe body rises up dramatically right where the saildrive exits the hull. The deck laminate has a balsa core, meaning any poorly sealed deck penetration or flush hatch can admit moisture; all hatches are flush to the deck, so check each frame and gasket. The fiberglass strongback framework is bonded to the hull to carry keel and rig loads, and the main bulkhead is laminated to hull and deck — inspect for separation at these bonds. With the two aft cabins extending so far into the stern there is little volume left for a lazarette, limiting stowage and possibly concentrating bilge access; verify drainage paths in that confined space.
Availability and Buyer's Takeaway
Typical markets for the used Hanse 445 include the Netherlands, Greece, Spain, Türkiye, New Zealand, and Denmark. For a shopper, the takeaway is straightforward:
- Prioritize the three-stateroom layout if resale or charter familiarity matters; four-stateroom splits exist but are less common
- Verify vinylester skin and saildrive-hull junction for blister or cracking signs
- Test balsa-cored deck and flush hatches for softness or past leakage
- Confirm strongback and bulkhead bond integrity
- Expect minimal lazarette volume due to deep aft cabins; plan stowage accordingly
