Design and Construction
The hull carries beam well forward at both deck and chine level, with very full bows and lots of flare above the waterline, especially forward. Full bow sections balance the broad stern and create a far larger forecabin than older boats of similar length would offer. Multiple chines run the full length of the high-volume hull for hydrodynamic reasons, to maximise interior space, and to help disguise freeboard. Below the waterline the beam stays relatively narrow with low wetted surface area, which boosts performance in light airs. Felci studied single and twin rudder options and determined that a single deep rudder is sufficient even with full sail in more than 25 knots of breeze; that choice gives more feel on the helm than twin rudders, eases handling in harbour through prop wash over the rudder, and frees interior and stowage space. Dufour worked with charter operators in Croatia to optimise quick, easy access for maintenance and repair of systems throughout the boat.
Rig and Handling
The Dufour 44 wears a slightly more raked mast than usual — four degrees against the typical one and a half — and a low gooseneck carried over from the Dufour range. A self-tacking jib is standard for easy handling, while an optional genoa on track delivers greater upwind performance and power; a smaller non-overlapping jib can also be specified. Dufour and Elvstrom refined sail shape together, and the mainsail carries two single-line reefs whose positions were set after joint analysis, though a third reef cannot be ordered from the factory — a spare sheave in the boom and space at the mast plate allow one to be added later. Two pairs of winches sit on the cockpit coamings, one for the mainsheet and one for the headsail sheets, and the mainsheet runs to a bridle across the forward end of the companionway. Test sailors found her quick, responsive and well balanced; she made up to 7.2 knots upwind, peaked over 10 knots with apparent wind abaft the beam, and the factory crew claimed 14 knots flying the asymmetric on a breezy day. Stability builds quickly as she heels and the leeward chine digs in, with the hull stiffening up at around 18° of heel.
Accommodations
Buyers choose from three or four cabin versions, each with en-suite bathrooms, ranging from four cabins and four heads to three cabins with two heads and two dedicated shower rooms. The forward owner's suite gains the most from the full bows, with bookshelves and stowage by the bedhead. Interior layouts are by Ardizio Design: a large C-shape saloon seating area with a hexagonal table to port, supplemented by three movable fabric stools that are lightweight, non-tipping, and stack to extend the starboard lounging space. A forward galley with new worktops and optimised storage is one option, while a conventional linear galley to starboard is the alternative; drawers sit under both settees, a wine rack hides under the saloon floor, and lights with USB outlets are by each berth. The cockpit adds a trademark outdoor galley with barbecue and sink above the stern platform, a fridge in the cockpit table, and liferaft stowage in the middle of the transom. Helm stations are well outboard for a clear view of the sail luff, with a seat behind for long stretches at the wheel, though there are no factory foot chocks — that remains a dealer-level customisation.
Variants and Equipment
The 44 is offered in Easy, Ocean and Performance variants; the pared-down Easy version is expected to sell chiefly to charter fleets, while the Ocean model is the likely pick for most private owners and adds tracks for an overlapper and the German mainsheet system. The hybrid ODSea+ version extends quiet sailing with up to 1,800 watts of solar panels, a 45 kW capacity, 27 kW lithium batteries, a 14 kW generator, and 1.5 kW hydrogeneration. Practical cockpit details include a bow hatch into a locker for warps, fenders and downwind sails, rope-tidy lockers forward of each helm, and commendably large rope bins at the companionway and behind the winches. A set of steps each side of the transom barbecue leads from the bathing platform to the cockpit.
The Verdict
The Dufour 44 is a thoroughly modern cruiser that trades the older generation's narrower bow for volume and comfort without surrendering the lively, well-balanced feel Felci's hulls are known for. Her light-air capability, single-rudder feedback, and clever modular interior make her a compelling private-owner bluewater candidate, though the galley's harbour-biased layout and modest fuel capacity are real caveats.
