Designed by Olin Stephens of the legendary Sparkman & Stephens firm as Design 1959, the S&S 34 stands as one of the most celebrated pocket passagemakers in maritime history. Launched in 1968, this 33.5foot cruiserracer was conceived during the transition from the Cruising Club of America (CCA) rule to the International Offshore Rule (IOR). The boat quickly cemented its legendary status when former British Prime Minister Sir Edward Heath won the grueling 1969 Sydney Hobart Yacht Race aboard his S&S 34, Morning Cloud. Beyond its racing pedigree, the S&S 34 became the definitive choice for historic singlehanded circumnavigations, including those of Jon Sanders, Jesse Martin, and Jessica Watson. Production began in the United Kingdom with Aquafibre and in Western Australia with the Swarbrick Brothers, who constructed the vast majority of the hulls. The design’s extraordinary offshore survival record has kept it in constant demand, prompting modern builders to revive the molds using contemporary composite techniques.
