When Bill Shaw penned the lines for the Pearson 37 in 1981, he was tasked with a classic design paradox: engineering a yacht that could aggressively compete under the prevailing International Offshore Rule (IOR) while retaining the structural integrity and liveability demanded by the cruising market. Released in 1982 by Pearson Yachts under the umbrella of Grumman Allied Industries, the Pearson 37 was a highly specialized, transitional design. Only 42 or 43 hulls were completed before production ended in 1986, making it a rare and distinct model. This original version must not be confused with the subsequent Pearson 372 (produced from 1988 to 1991), which abandoned the racing pedigree entirely in favor of a beamier, shoaldraft hull form tailored for maximum interior volume. The original Pearson 37 represents a sweet spot in the builder’s history, delivering an agile, oceancapable platform that proved its worth on the racecourse—winning Boat of the Year twice in the Gulf of Maine series—without abandoning the needs of the cruising family.
