The Moody 38 Eclipse represents a highly refined, yet historically brief, foray into the midsized deck saloon market. Produced between late 1990 and early 1992 by Marine Projects in Plymouth, England, this rare cruiser—of which only twentyfour hulls were ever completed—was designed by the renowned naval architect Bill Dixon. At the time of its introduction, the cruising world was witnessing a divergence: traditionalists favored deep aft cockpits, while a growing segment of cruising sailors sought the protection and panoramic visibility of a pilothouse. Dixon’s design brief merged these requirements, crafting a luxurious dualhelm vessel that allowed a crew to sail in comfort regardless of weather. Positioned as a larger sibling to the successful Eclipse 33 and a more manageable alternative to the Eclipse 43, the 38footer was built to a standard of structural and aesthetic joinery that came to define the highwater mark of late twentiethcentury British boatbuilding.
