Designed by maritime architect Barney Lehman in the late 1940s and first built in 1953, the Lehman 12 is an iconic piece of American yachting history. Originally manufactured by Lehman’s own West Coast startup, PlastiGlass, it stood as one of the first production sailboats built using the thennovel material of fiberglass. Soon after, in 1955, the legendary W.D. Schock Corporation acquired PlastiGlass and assumed production, turning this 12foot open dinghy into a foundational platform that would eventually inspire the larger Lehman 14 and the immensely successful Lido 14. Today, the Lehman 12 is celebrated not as a relic, but as an active, highly competitive onedesign racing dinghy that remains a cornerstone of harbor racing in Southern California.
