In the mid20th century, British naval architect Jack Laurent Giles carved out a reputation as one of the most brilliant and uncompromising innovators in yacht design. While his legendary Vertue and Sopranino classes proved that tiny, seaworthy pocket cruisers could cross oceans, his larger custom and semiproduction commissions of the 1950s and 1960s tackled a different challenge: maximizing comfort, space, and safety for cruising families without sacrificing the performance of a proper sailing yacht. This design philosophy found its purest expression in the Laurent Giles 43, most famously manifested as the Donella Class. Conceived in 1956 as Design Number 0279, this fortythreefoot auxiliary cruiser became a benchmark for the emerging performance motorsailer genre. It successfully bridged the gap between traditional heavydisplacement cruising boats and the modern, centercockpit passage makers that would dominate the latter half of the century.
