Buying a used Laurent Giles: the design office is the constant, the builder and era are what to establish

A used Laurent Giles carries a naval-architecture credit, not a factory guarantee. The Lymington office designed more than 1,400 projects since 1927, and outside yards built every one of them — so two boats sharing the Laurent Giles name can come from entirely different builders, materials, and decades. The clearest case is the Vertue: the same 25-foot design came in classic teak-and-mahogany joinery from E.F. Elkins of Christchurch through 1962, then from Cheoy Lee of Hong Kong starting in 1963, and later in GRP from yards including Westerly and Bossoms of Oxford. Before weighing condition, establish which yard actually built the hull in front of you and in what material — that answer changes what kind of survey, and what kind of maintenance history, the boat calls for.

Which era to target

The Vertue's own builder history gives the clearest boundary: pre-1963 hulls are classic Elkins-built wood — teak and mahogany planking over English oak framing, lead keel, bronze floors — while Cheoy Lee's Hong Kong-built boats from 1963 on, and the GRP examples that followed from Westerly and Bossoms, represent a later and different kind of build. The Laurent Giles 43's Donella class marks its own era: built from 1961 by A.H. Moody & Son of Swanwick in carvel teak on hardwood frames, its higher-freeboard layout was designed for uninterrupted below-decks living rather than for racing. The Wanderer class, the office's wider, roomier production answer to the one-off WANDERER III, is a third track worth targeting on its own terms rather than folding it into either the Vertue or the 43.

The lineup runs from small to substantial: the 15-foot Jolly Boat dinghy, the 25-foot Vertue and 30-foot Wanderer, the Rambler-class Rose Rambler at just under 35 feet, and larger cruisers like the Bowman 40 and Laurent Giles 43. Decide first whether the voyaging pedigree of the Vertue or Wanderer lines matters most, or whether a specific boat like the 43 is the better fit, then use the full model directory on this page to work down to individual hulls and confirm builder and era for each.
