Designed by legendary naval architect Bruce Farr and launched in 1977 as Design Number 74, the Farr 5000 represents a hallmark of the trailersailing boom of the late twentieth century. Produced in New Zealand by Sea Nymph Boats—and later McDell Marine—the Farr 5000 was conceived as an accessible, easily handled, and highly economical companion to the immensely popular Farr 6000. Conceived at a time when fuel efficiency and towing weight were primary concerns for the average household, the boat was engineered to be light enough to be towed by a standard family sedan with an engine displacement of just 1300cc to 1600cc. Despite its diminutive overall length of 16 feet 8 inches, this clever pocket cruiser was designed with a wide, stable beam and powerful stern sections, allowing it to bridge the gap between a highperformance sailing dinghy and a comfortable pocket pocket cruiser. It stands today as one of the most successful microtrailer yachts ever produced in the Southern Hemisphere, maintaining a passionate and active class association.
