Buying a used Farr: the builder decides the boat as much as the plans do
A used Farr is not a single ownership experience — it's a naval architecture practice's plans, executed by whichever yard built that particular hull, and much of the risk in a used Farr sits with the builder and the class, not with the name on the sail. A Carroll Marine grand-prix one-design, a New Zealand home-finished 1020, and a Beneteau-built cruiser are different boats to own, inspect and maintain, even though Bruce Farr's practice drew every one of them. Buying used here means matching a category — club racer, grand-prix one-design, or production cruiser — to the builder that actually put it together, not shopping the badge alone.
Which era to target
The earliest production era runs through New Zealand builders like Sea Nymph Boats, which built the Farr 1020 one-design keelboat from Bruce Farr's 1981 design; roughly half of the 149 boats built were sold as hull-and-deck packages for owners to finish themselves, with key components like masts, keels and rudders bought separately from Sea Nymph. The late-1990s grand-prix era brought Carroll Marine's oven-cured composite construction, built for both the Farr 40 One Design and the Farr 30 (raced originally as the Mumm 30) — a more industrial build standard than those earlier home-finished one-designs. Beneteau's own designer page places its Farr-designed production line back to the First 45F5 in 1989, running through to the First 35 and First 40 more recently — a mass-production standard again distinct from either the New Zealand one-designs or Carroll Marine's racing composites.
