Endeavour 32 Buyer's Guide
Shopping the used Endeavour 32 means looking at a 1975–1982 production run of about 600 boats that began as Ted Irwin’s Irwin 32 before Dennis Robbins reworked the molds for Endeavour Yacht Corporation. The boat is a 32-foot fin-keel sloop with a skeg-hung rudder, 11,700 pounds displacement, and 5,000 pounds of internal lead ballast, offered either as a fixed 4-foot-2-inch shoal keel or, until 1979, a centerboard version with 3-foot-6-inch board-up draft. Most survivors on the market are the later shoal-keel boats with the tapered cabin trunk.
Layouts on the Used Market
The interior is a molded fiberglass unit with varnished teak and a teak parquet sole, carrying six berths across a forward V-berth, pull-out port settee double, starboard single, and port quarterberth. There is no door between the main cabin and forward berth, though some owners added the optional privacy curtain. The galley to starboard opposite the pilot berth holds a large original icebox near ten cubic feet, and the head sits to port forward of the salon. The biggest interior shortfall buyers notice is the absence of any chart table or dedicated navigation station. Early boats had six opening and four fixed ports; later ones standardized on ten opening Beckson ports with two large aluminum-and-Lexan hatches.
Equipment and Common Upgrades
Commonly fitted gear on brokerage boats includes air conditioning, a dodger, autopilot, and a chartplotter, reflecting her Florida-and-Caribbean cruising intent. A frequent owner-upgrade cluster runs to energy and self-sufficiency: solar, an inverter, and a watermaker appear on some boats, along with AIS and hot water. Rig and sail-handling upgrades are less common but show up as electric winches on a few, and a swim platform is an occasional addition. The standard pedestal steering with a 24-inch Edson wheel and the original Lewmar cockpit winches are usually intact, but buyers should confirm which engine a given hull carries.
What to Inspect
Practical Sailor’s used-boat reporting flags a higher-than-average run of owner gelcoat complaints anchor, and one owner documented extensive deck delamination on his example. A surveyor found loose tabbing around a forward bulkhead in another boat, so check bulkhead bonds carefully. On older hulls there is no deck fill for the forward water tank, and flaking gelcoat inside that integral tank has been reported. There are no deck scuppers, so examine cockpit and deck drainage paths for modification. Centerboard versions carry about three feet of exposed, vulnerable centerboard pennant wire with the board down, and the engine compartment has no sound insulation regardless of model.
Availability and Buyer's Takeaway
These boats turn up in the United States market. For a buyer, the checklist is straightforward: confirm keel type and whether the centerboard pennant is protected; inspect gelcoat and deck coring for delamination; verify forward tank access and any drainage fixes; look for bulkhead tabbing soundness; and match the engine to the model year. A shoal-keel later boat with the tapered trunk and a GM-series Yanmar is the typical, lower-risk find.
- Confirm keel configuration and centerboard pennant condition
- Inspect gelcoat, deck coring, and bulkhead tabbing
- Verify forward water tank fill and cockpit drainage modifications
- Check for added navigation space and original rig hardware
