Dufour 37 Buyer's Guide
Shopping for a used Dufour 37 means looking at a model introduced in fall 2022 as the successor to the Dufour 360, designed by Umberto Felci and built at the Dufour Yachts facility in Périgny near La Rochelle. These are modern coastal cruisers with infused hulls and a ballast-bulb keel, offered in two interior plans and several performance packages, so the search is less about age and more about how each example was specified and whether it came from the charter pool.
Layouts on the Used Market
Owner three-cabin layouts are the more common on the used market, but both are available; ex-charter examples are common. The two-stateroom version pairs one owner’s cabin with one large aft cabin and a single head that is significantly larger than the head in the three-stateroom plan, which can sleep eight people. The forward cabin in either layout features a true central island bed and benefits from the forward-widened hull that delivers exceptional volume, with a coachroof window giving a forward view. Saloon settees are long and straight beneath hullside ports, and the galley is fitted with an all-Corian worktop. On deck, the cockpit is spacious and fluid with an exterior galley and aft plancha grill, and a forward sun deck carries an inflatable lounging pad.
Equipment and Common Upgrades
A used Dufour 37 will commonly be fitted with a cockpit shower, autopilot, and chartplotter. Owners will often have added hot water, a bimini, a swim platform, and a self-tacking jib. Less common but seen as owner upgrades are an inverter, furling main, AIS, solar, asymmetric spinnaker, bow thruster, life raft, heating, code zero, teak decks, and similar gear. The standard rig uses a bridle mainsheet and low-friction rings on barber-haulers for the headsail, with just two Lewmar 40 winches on the coachroof, so a well-equipped example may show the German mainsheet system or Performance-package adjustable backstays. The standard engine is a Yanmar 19 hp saildrive, with a 30 hp Volvo saildrive as the optional upgrade.
What to Inspect
The documented record on the Dufour 37 shows no structural defects or safety-relevant flooding paths. The practical inspection points are configuration checks rather than fault hunts: confirm whether the example has the standard 1.9 m draft or the deeper Performance-package fin, verify the actual winch count against the standard two Lewmar 40s, and check which headsail is fitted since the standard self-tacker is frequently upgraded. The hull-to-deck joint uses a moulded upstand forming flat-topped bulwarks, and both hull and deck are vacuum-infused with a foam core above the waterline, so inspect those interfaces for cosmetic window delamination given the large topsides window is partly non-functional show area.
Availability and Buyer's Takeaway
Used Dufour 37s typically appear on the used market in the United States, France, Croatia, Italy, Türkiye, and Germany. For the buyer, the short checklist is: choose layout by head size need (two-stateroom for the larger single head), confirm draft and performance package, verify engine hp and saildrive condition, and review the winch and headsail spec against the lean standard. Ex-charter examples are common, so assess usage history accordingly.
- Confirm two- vs three-cabin layout and head size
- Verify standard 1.9 m draft vs Performance deeper fin
- Check winch count and headsail upgrade status
- Inspect hull-to-deck upstand and topside window areas
- Review ex-charter history where applicable
