The Cal 24 holds a singular position in American yachting history as the vessel that launched Jensen Marine and established the legendary partnership between Jack Jensen and naval architect C. William Lapworth. Originally introduced in 1958 as the Lapworth 24, the design was a radical departure from the heavy, fullkeeled wooden cruisers of the era. Built from the thenrevolutionary medium of fiberglass, it was a lightdisplacement, centerboardequipped racercruiser that could be easily trailered—a concept that helped democratize coastal sailing. While the "Cal" name would later be synonymous with oceancrossing icons like the Cal 40, the 24foot platform served as the engineering laboratory for Lapworth's theories on hull speed and surfability. Over its production life, the model evolved through several distinct iterations: the original centerboard "Lapworth 24," the fixedkeel Cal 24 Mark II, the flushdecked Cal T/4 designed for the IOR "Quarter Ton" rule, and finally the Cal 243 designed by C. Raymond Hunt Associates in the 1980s.
