Design and Construction

What distinguishes the H-323 structurally is the contrast between a solid hand-laid hull and a balsa-cored deck sandwich, the latter chosen to temper the interior climate anchor. That deck core is balsa, and because any penetration of the sandwich invites water into the core, work around deck fittings demands unusual care. Below the waterline the hull is solid glass with about 247 square feet of wetted surface, and the iron fin keel is bolted to a hull whose displacement-length ratio of 170 places her among light racers. The narrow beam — a length-to-beam ratio of 3.85 makes her slimmer than 95 percent of comparable designs — is the defining line of the whole boat: she gives up interior volume to gain a hull that slips through water very easily, as Yachting Monthly’s tester found when handling her in a marina and under way.

Rig and Handling

Groop offered more than one fractional rig, each carrying a mainsail-plus-jib area of about 384 square feet, and the sail plan is notably powerful for the hull’s size — the H-323 carries more rig than 97 percent of similar sailboats, which the data describe as significantly overrigged anchor. That excess canvas, paired with a sail-area-to-displacement figure of 20.5 under a 135-percent genoa, is what lets her outperform 69 percent of similar designs in light wind. On the wind she heels quickly to about 20 degrees and then feels good and stiff, settling into a groove, while her moderately light displacement lets her accelerate quickly in gusts. The spade rudder sits as far aft as possible, with the tiller reaching over the lazarette, and the cockpit is deep, secure, and self-draining. Writing in Yachting Monthly, test sailors found her quick and responsive on the helm, handling easily in close quarters and going astern predictably under engine.

Accommodations

Inside, the H-323 sleeps five and is finished in teak throughout, with headroom that is above average for the class though it tapers forward from about six feet at the companionway. A toilet is listed in the basic specification, while a Yachting Monthly survey noted 100 liters of water giving reasonable range and praised the slender boat’s surprising lockers beneath the berths, in the forepeak, and within the cockpit anchor. The trade-off is the absence of separate cabins or a double berth, which some will feel limits home comforts; a longtime owner countered that she is very comfortable and more than adequate for extended cruising for a serious sailor. A fitted cockpit tent extends living space at anchor, and the 1983 test boat even kept room for an electric guitar.

Known Issues

The single documented construction caution is the balsa-cored deck: because balsa is used as the sandwich core, special care must be taken with any work requiring penetration of the deck anchor. A buyer or owner should treat every deck fitting, winch base, and through-deck fastening as a potential core-intrusion point and keep it sealed.

Refits and Ownership

The H-323 may be fitted with an inboard Yanmar 1GM diesel of 7 horsepower on a shaft drive, a combination that yields a flat 7-knot speed under power and a 60-liter steel fuel tank good for about 60 hours of steady motoring. She lacks single-line reefing or a stack-pack as standard, so reefing upgrades are a common and worthwhile ownership improvement. The capsize screening value of 1.81 and a Motion Comfort Ratio of 20.9 — more comfortable than 31 percent of similar designs — frame her as a seaworthy light-displacement cruiser rather than a soft-riding passagemaker, and her previous owners’ regular Channel crossings to France confirm the offshore intent.
