X-Yachts XC-42 Buyer's Guide
Shopping the brokerage market for an X-Yachts XC42 means considering a 42-foot Danish cruiser built for long-distance voyaging between 2009 and 2018, with only 99 ever launched. The design came out of the Xcruising range and remains a recognizable step between pure performance boats and heavy-displacement passagemakers, now available only secondhand since the XC45 is the smallest new Xc offered today.
Layouts on the Used Market
Owner three-cabin arrangements are the more common find, though both owner and ex-charter layouts appear with regularity. The standard plan gives a J-shaped port galley, two aft doubles, and a forward cabin with en suite heads; MkI boats show an inboard longitudinal galley sink while MkII examples from hull 78 onward turned it athwartships for a forward-facing cook. Ex-charter history is common enough that a buyer should verify fitout and wear rather than assume a private-owner pedigree.
Equipment and Common Upgrades
Most XC42s on the market carry a bow thruster, autopilot, radar, AIS, chartplotter, electric winches, furling main, self-tacking jib and asymmetric spinnaker as commonly fitted gear, with teak decks and cabin heating also standard or fitted. A bimini and life raft are often seen, while solar panels, a gennaker and dinghy davits show up as occasional owner upgrades. For a buyer, the bow thruster and electric winches reduce short-handed docking and sail-handling load, the autopilot and AIS define offshore safety, and owner-added solar or a gennaker signals cruising flexibility worth noting.
What to Inspect
The XC42 uses the same rudder make as the X43 and XP44, which have suffered aluminium stock corrosion and expansion, so the rudder stock deserves a close corrosion check. Owners report the rudder bearing needs changing every six to seven years by use, and the Volvo Penta Saildrive carries a rubber gaiter that should be renewed past seven years. These are calendar-driven items, not defects, but a survey should date them.
Availability and Buyer's Takeaway
Typical markets run through the United Kingdom, Greece, Germany, Finland and France. For the shopping list: confirm rudder-stock condition and Saildrive gaiter age; verify MkI versus MkII galley and bathing-platform differences; check for ex-charter wear; prioritize boats with bow thruster, autopilot and AIS; and budget for electric-winch conversion if not already done.
