The Piper One Design (often referred to simply as the Piper OD or Piper 24) is a classic British keelboat that serves as a masterclass in translating America’s Cup pedigree into an accessible, enduring dayboat. Designed in 1965 by the legendary Scottish naval architect David Boyd—renowned for his work on the 12Meter challengers Sceptre and Sovereign—the Piper OD was envisioned as a scaleddown, fiberglassconstruction dayracer. Drawing direct inspiration from Sovereign, Boyd incorporated the same sweeping overhangs, graceful sheer, and deepchested classic lines into a twentyfourfoot hull. The class was born on the River Clyde in Scotland, where a prototype woodcarvel hull named Sandpiper was launched in 1966 to act as the plug for the fiberglass production run. Over its production run ending in 1981, fiftyseven GRP hulls were completed, establishing a highly competitive and deeply loyal fleet that continues to race actively in Clyde waters, Falmouth, and even select international outposts.
