Outremer 45-2 Buyer's Guide
The Outremer 45 on the brokerage market is the 2014-generation Barreau-Neuman catamaran built by Outremer Yachting, a performance bluewater cruiser rather than a bulky charter-style multihull. Narrow hulls, a low cabintrunk, and a central helm make her as suited to a couple as to a small crew, and the steady factory upgrades through 2020 mean earlier and later examples differ in meaningful ways. Shopping one well means knowing which layouts and equipment are typical and what construction points deserve a close look.
Layouts on the Used Market
Two interior arrangements appear. The three-cabin version gives the entire starboard hull to the owner, while the four-cabin adds a cabin in the starboard bow. Either way the saloon holds an L-shaped galley to starboard with an inboard counter open to the cockpit through a sliding door, and a nav station just forward. The helm is a single station with wheel to port as standard; a pair of outboard tillers with composite bucket seats was the factory option for those wanting the open-helm feel the design is known for.
Equipment and Common Upgrades
Solar is a common fit, often mounted on the dinghy davits as seen on the original test boat, and a code zero, gennaker, or spinnaker is commonly found to round out the self-tacking solent for trade-wind work. A bimini is also commonly fitted, with davits and gennaker fittings having become standard in 2019. For a buyer, the load-bearing clusters are sail and downwind power—code zero and gennaker on the sprit—plus the sun and energy system of solar and bimini that make at-anchor life tenable. Factory deck hardware ran to Lewmar winches and a Facnor jib furler, with a Profurl continuous-line furler at the sprit for the A-sail, so check those furlers and the electrical multiplexer added in 2020 if present.
What to Inspect
The hull layup below the waterline is solid glass by design for grounding security, but confirm there is no damage beyond cosmetic scratches—one boat grounded four days on a Tahiti reef with only scratches, so heavy impact history should show more. The hull/deck joint is glassed all around and the bows contain crash boxes; inspect those boxes and the joint for prior water ingress. Daggerboard trunks should be rock-solid, and the boards themselves are meant to break away as fuses, so look for trunk integrity and any evidence of board loss or forced reentry. The Lewmar windlass sits farther aft than usual to keep weight mid-boat; verify its mounting and chain storage.
Availability and Buyer's Takeaway
These boats are typically found in French Polynesia. For a used-market check: confirm three- or four-cabin layout against your plans; verify solar, downwind sails, and bimini are present or budget for them; inspect hull/deck joint, crash boxes, and daggerboard trunks; confirm 2019-or-later standard davits and gennaker fittings if buying a newer example; and test the CZone multiplexer if fitted from 2020.
