The North Star 500 represents a fascinating intersection of classic 1970s yacht design and the competitive fire of the International Offshore Rule (IOR). Commissioned by the Canadian builder North Star Yachts—a shortlived subsidiary of Hughes Boat Works operating under the temporary ownership of U.S. Steel—the design was penned by the legendary naval architecture firm Sparkman & Stephens as Design 2135. Introduced in 1973, the North Star 500 was conceived specifically to compete as an IOR Quarter Ton class racercruiser. During this era, the Quarter Ton Cup was a hotbed for design innovation, and North Star sought to deliver a productionready, highly capable pocket racer that could double as a pocket cruiser for the weekend enthusiast.
