The mid1960s marked a revolutionary epoch in North American boatbuilding as traditional wooden construction gave way to the wonders of reinforced plastics. At the forefront of this transition in Canada was Paceship Yachts—originally operating as the Industrial Shipping Company in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia. In 1964, the builder introduced the Mouette 19, a 19.5foot centerboard daysailer designed by the prolific naval architect G. William McVay. Designed to be a "class boat" that could bridge the gap between recreational family daysailing and competitive club racing, the Mouette 19 quickly became a familiar fixture across the Great Lakes and the Canadian Maritimes. McVay's design married a traditional dorylike seaworthiness with a modern, easily driven fiberglass form, presenting a highly approachable yet surprisingly spirited option for sailors of all skill levels.
