Islander 32-2 Buyer's Guide
The Islander 32 Mark II is a Robert Perry-designed 1976 introduction from Islander Yachts, with around 200 built during a four-year run. On the used market it draws buyers who want a beamy, solid fiberglass cruiser with a roomy teak interior and a well-regarded cockpit. Because original builder documentation is sparse, a careful visual inspection matters more than paperwork.
Layouts on the Used Market
The Mark II is the mid-1970s reboot of the line and should not be confused with the 1960s narrow-beam long-keel 32. Below, the conventional plan centers on a forward double V-berth, a hanging locker and head amidships, offset saloon settees that double as sea berths, an L-shaped port galley, and a starboard quarterberth. The fold-away table and half bulkheads make the saloon feel larger than the foot length suggests. Above, the spacious cockpit has the pedestal well aft and the primaries close to the helm.
Equipment and Common Upgrades
On the used fleet, a dodger, autopilot, and chartplotter are commonly fitted, making most examples ready for short-handed navigation without immediate investment. Less common but seen on some boats are a swim platform and radar as owner upgrades. Power ranges from the original Universal Atomic 4 gas engine to Volvo and Westerbeke diesels; the preferred Westerbeke L 25 is the one to seek for reliability, while the small Volvo diesels are easier to service but leave the boat feeling under powered.
What to Inspect
Osmotic blistering has affected many 32 Mark IIs over their lives, so survey the hull below the waterline for gelcoat bubbling and past repair patches. Leaks at the hull-to-deck joint were not uncommon; trace the aluminum toerail seam for staining or softness in the plywood-cored deck above. Some owners have reported trouble at the main bulkhead below, so check its tabbing for cracks or movement. Long-distance cruisers report a shallow bilge that soaks the cabin sole, so look for water staining or soft sole panels near the keel. On deck, confirm the anchor-locker latch secures properly and that the small forward running lights are not the boat’s only navigation lights.
