The C&C 33 Mark II arrived in 1984 as a deliberate departure from the Canadian builder’s usual construction script, and over 200 of them were built in the four years the boat was in production. Where C&C had long leaned on balsacored hulls throughout, the Mark II’s hull construction represented a departure from typical C&C practices, in that only the forward panels of the hull are balsa cored. The remainder is a conventional hand layup of mat and roving with an isophthalic gelcoat and skinning resin, while the deck is a onepiece molding with balsa core in the horizontal surfaces. Hardware is backed with both aluminum and Coremat for strength at the attachment points, and the hulltodeck joint is standard, with an inwardturning hull flange on which the deck is set, stainless bolts running through the joint and through an aluminum toerail that covers it. The whole stem fitting and toerail corner pieces are heavy aluminum castings traditional on C&C boats, though C&C used plastic moldings for the stanchion bases on the 33. New boats showed good quality gelcoat and generally fair hulls.

C&C 33-2 Buyer's Guide

Shopping the brokerage market for a C&C 33 Mark II means looking at a 1984-introduced design with over 200 built during its four-year production run, offered in fin-keel and centerboard forms. The boat is a pragmatic Canadian cruiser-racer whose quirks are well documented by survey data rather than rumor, and the used fleet spans the United States and Canada.

Layouts on the Used Market

The 33-2 carries a conventional belowdecks plan regardless of keel choice: V-berth forward with a built-in bureau, a single-fiberglass-molded head with wash basin opposite a hanging locker, port and starboard settees around a saloon table, an L-shaped galley, and a nav station at a double quarterberth. Above, the foredeck is narrow but sidedecks are wide from inboard shrouds, and the T-shaped cockpit has a bridgedeck traveler, short-but-comfortable seats, and a cavernous starboard locker. The cabinhouse reads low but sits high inside. Centerboard boats hide the lifting cable in a stainless tube that doubles as the cabin table support, a feature absent in the fin-keel layout.

Equipment and Common Upgrades

Used boats often carry heating, solar, gennaker, spinnaker, bimini, dodger, and autopilot as part of typical brokerage inventory. Less common owner additions include asymmetric spinnaker, freezer, hot water, radar, and chartplotter. Standard original gear worth verifying includes the 120-volt shore-power system with 50-foot cord, three-burner propane stove with oven, 12-volt lighting, 36-inch destroyer wheel with integral controls, double lifelines with gates, and a pushpit gate for a stern ladder. A Danforth fits the forward anchor well. Later-model spars from Offshore Spars in Detroit may replace early C&C spar-shop rigs.

What to Inspect

The biggest complaints among surveyed owners were engine access and cabin ventilation, with nearly all noting the engine was a challenge to access easily, so confirm whether prior owners opened panels or left the tight Yanmar 2GM compartment as delivered. Most owners added solar vents or other openings for ventilation, a retrofit worth checking for execution. A few surveyed owners reported blisters, but both said the problem was minor, so inspect hull gelcoat accordingly. One owner cautioned others to check the transmission shaft cable as his was not installed and adjusted properly, resulting in premature clutch failure, making that cable adjustment a concrete survey point on any example.

Availability and Buyer's Takeaway

The C&C 33 Mark II appears across the United States and Canada. For a shopper, the shortlist is: confirm keel type and centerboard cable routing; verify engine access modifications and transmission shaft cable adjustment; check for added ventilation and minor blister history; confirm standard galley, shore power, and safety gear remain intact. It is a documented, fixable-issue boat rather than a hidden-defect risk.
