The Hughes 26 is a quintessential example of the Canadian fiberglass revolution of the late 1970s, representing a bridge between the classic elegance of Sparkman & Stephens design and the practical, productionoriented approach of Howard Hughes. Born from the Northstar 600—originally Sparkman & Stephens design 2135—the Hughes 26 was introduced in 1977 after Howard Hughes repurchased the company from US Steel. While the hull retains the pedigree of its S&S origins, Hughes modified the deck and interior to better suit the burgeoning family cruising market of the era. This model shares its DNA with several siblings: it is a direct evolution of the Northstar 600, and after Hughes Boat Works went into receivership in 1980, the design was briefly continued by Aura Yachts as the Aura 26.
