Hanse 311 Buyer's Guide
The Hanse 311 is a compact but capable German-built cruiser that rewards buyers who know what to look for. Produced by Yachtzentrum Greifswald between 2000 and 2006, it emerged from a period when Hanse was rapidly expanding and refining its identity as a production builder — quality assurance certified by German Lloyd and designed by the respected Judel/Vrolijk team to CE Category A (Ocean) standards. What you get on the brokerage market today is a well-engineered 29-footer with a genuine offshore pedigree, a notably spacious interior for its length, and a rig deliberately tuned for short-handed sailing. The flip side is that these boats are now well into their second and third ownership cycles, so a thorough survey focused on the construction and mechanical particulars covered below is essential before you commit.
Layouts on the Used Market
The Hanse 311 was offered in two interior configurations, and both surface on the used market with reasonable regularity. The standard layout places a private aft double in the starboard quarter — separated from the saloon by a door — and a V-berth forward, with two settee berths in the main cabin providing additional sleeping for a family crew. A port lazarette adjacent to the cockpit offered a pipe berth arrangement, though access is tight and most owners treat this space as stowage rather than a sleeping station. The alternative "charter" layout provided mirror-image double quarter berths at both aft corners, sacrificing the head's adjacency to the port lazarette in favour of more symmetrical sleeping arrangements. Charter-configured boats are encountered somewhat less frequently but do circulate, particularly in markets where the boat spent time in commercial fleets.
The high-gloss mahogany veneer joinery is the interior's most memorable feature — striking when well-kept, immediately obvious when neglected. It either dazzles or overwhelms depending on taste, and its condition is one of the clearest visual signals of how a boat has been cared for.
Equipment and Common Upgrades
Most Hanse 311s found on the brokerage market are commonly fitted with a self-tacking jib — this was central to the boat's design philosophy from new, and the foredeck traveller system that enables it is usually present and intact. A chartplotter at the helm has become nearly universal among boats in circulation, typically a later addition by owners updating the original Simrad log and depth instrumentation that came standard. Autopilot is a frequent fitment, reflecting the boat's suitability for short-handed passages. A cockpit shower also appears with notable regularity, as this was included in many standard or near-standard build packages.
Heating systems are often seen aboard examples originating from northern European markets, which is unsurprising given the boat's Baltic origins. Among owner upgrades, solar panels and a short-handed running rigging setup are sometimes encountered, as successive owners have adapted these boats for more independent passage-making. A proper swim platform or extended boarding arrangement is another upgrade owners have sometimes added, since the standard transom did not open and the original boarding ladder arrangement was functional but modest.
What to Inspect
The hull construction combines solid GRP below the waterline with an end-grain balsa-core sandwich in the topsides and deck, and the deck sandwich deserves careful attention during survey. Balsa-cored decks from this era are susceptible to water ingress at hardware penetrations, and even well-maintained examples may have localised softness around chainplates, stanchion bases, and deck fittings. Tap the deck systematically and probe any area where hardware has been added or re-bedded by a previous owner.
The keel attachment and the cast-iron fin are worth particular scrutiny. The standard fin keel is bolted with stainless-steel keel bolts, and these boats are old enough that any history of grounding or hard use warrants ultrasound or removal of the bolt covers to inspect for corrosion or weeping. The bulb-keel option, which won recognition at the 2001 Bricola de Oro Design competition, is mechanically distinct from the standard iron fin and should be inspected for any signs of the joint between bulb and fin showing movement.
The 19 hp Volvo Penta saildrive is a reliable unit but saildrives require periodic bellows replacement — confirm the bellows history and inspect for any signs of weeping or degradation, as a failed bellows can sink a boat at the dock. The saildrive leg itself should be free of corrosion and the anode should be fresh. Any boat that has spent extended time in the water on charter without diligent maintenance schedules may have deferred this service.
The mahogany marine plywood interior, while visually impressive when new, can delaminate or show stress cracking at bulkhead-to-hull joints if the glassing has failed or if the boat has been worked hard offshore. Inspect the bulkhead bases carefully, particularly at the forward chainplate bulkhead where the settee berths extend into it — Perry's review flagged this foot-pocket arrangement as a design choice worth noting and the bulkhead base joint at that location deserves close scrutiny.
The self-tacking jib track and car system on the foredeck should be examined for wear in the track and condition of the car stoppers, which can work loose over time.
Availability and Buyer's Takeaway
The Hanse 311 circulates most actively in European brokerage, with examples widely found in the United Kingdom, Portugal, Italy, Sweden, and Slovenia. Boats also appear in Canadian waters, typically among buyers who sourced them from European sellers. The model is thinly represented in Australia and the United States, though not unknown. Overall availability is modest — production ran for only six years and volumes were relatively limited by comparison with Hanse's larger models — so buyers may need patience or flexibility on geography.
For its size the 311 punches above its weight on offshore capability and sailing ease. The self-tacking headsail, fractional rig with swept spreaders, and saildrive installation make it genuinely manageable with two people. The interior is more liveable than many 29-footers. The main risks are those common to any early-2000s production boat with balsa coring and a saildrive: deferred maintenance on the bellows, wet decks, and corroding keel hardware.
Before making an offer, confirm:
- Saildrive bellows replacement history and current condition
- Deck tap-test results and survey findings on core moisture
- Keel bolt inspection, particularly if the boat has grounding history
- Condition of the mahogany interior joinery and bulkhead-to-hull joints
- Foredeck jib traveller track and car stopper integrity
- Service history on the Volvo Penta engine and cooling system
- Confirmation of which keel and layout variant the boat carries
