Hanse 355 Buyer's Guide
The Hanse 355 is a Judel/Vrolijk-designed 34-foot-7-inch cruiser from Hanse Yachts that began production in 2009 and now turns up regularly on the brokerage market as a legacy model. She was built both as ex-charter and private ownership examples, with a two- or three-cabin interior, and the used fleet shows a clear split in how those layouts were specified.
Layouts on the Used Market
Owner-spec three-cabin boats are the more common sight among used 355s, but two-cabin versions are available and worth seeking if you prioritize shower space. The three-cabin 355 holds three double berths inside the hull, while the two-cabin layout gives a larger head with a separate shower section and a huge sail-storage locker beneath the portside cockpit seat, accessible from the head. Ex-charter examples are common and will typically show the higher-cabin-count configuration. Either way the saloon seats six, with a larger table than the smaller 325, and the galley gains a little extra bench space.
Equipment and Common Upgrades
Most used 355s come already equipped with heating, a bimini, chartplotter, the standard self-tacking jib, autopilot, teak decks, an inverter, and both symmetric and asymmetric spinnaker gear, plus a swim platform, cockpit shower, and life raft — a strong baseline for a cruising buyer. Often-seen additions include a furling main, bow thruster, electric winches, hot water, a dodger, and a short-handed sail-handling setup. For buyer consequence, the power-and-energy cluster (heating, inverter, often a bow thruster) means less reliance on shore power; the canvas-and-handling cluster (bimini, dodger, furling main, electric winches) speaks to easier solo docking and reefing; and the navigation cluster (chartplotter, autopilot) is largely standard. Teak decks are common but deserve a close look for soft spots.
What to Inspect
The one documented deck caveat is the gloss-finish cabin tops, which offer no foot-grip when wet and make moving forward tricky in those conditions. Otherwise the known construction picture is reassuring: the hull is monolithic fiberglass with a vinylester first layer and isophthalic gelcoat, the deck is balsa-cored, and bulkheads are laminated to hull and deck. Check the Volvo D1-30 saildrive for typical rubber-boot service history, and on teak-decked boats confirm no core intrusion at fasteners.
Availability and Buyer's Takeaway
Typical markets for the 355 are the United Kingdom, Greece, Australia, Italy, and Canada. For a shopper, the short list is: confirm whether you want two-cabin separate-shower volume or three-cabin guest capacity; verify the saildrive service record; inspect teak decks for core issues; test the gloss cabin top footing with damp shoes; and confirm the inverter and heating are functional. The 355 rewards the buyer who wants an easy-handling, well-built small cruiser without paying for a new-model premium.
