ETAP 24i Buyer's Guide
The ETAP 24i on the brokerage market is a 26ft-class trailable sloop built by ETAP in Belgium from 1999 through 2009, designed by Marc-Oliver von Ahlen. Its double-skin foam construction makes it unsinkable, and the boat’s twin-rudder, backstayless character carries straight over from the smaller 21i. For a shopper, the appeal is a forgiving yet sporty 24-footer that can be kept on a trailer or parked in shoal creeks thanks to its tandem-keel draft.
Layouts on the Used Market
Two keel layouts circulate. The tandem keel draws just 2ft 9½in and lets the hull sit lower on the trailer than the deeper fin, while the fin keel’s lead bulb reaches 4ft 11in and was the better choice for stiffness, speed and manoeuvrability. Inboard versions use a Yanmar 9hp 1GM saildrive accessed by lifting the cockpit sole; outboard versions turn the under-sole void into stowage. Below, the beech-laminate interior has no double aft cabin but offers wide settee berths whose backrests unclip to extend the sleeping width, a starboard hanging-locker door that doubles as a saloon or cockpit table, a split galley abaft the bulkhead, port heads and a bow V-berth, with 5ft 7in saloon headroom.
Equipment and Common Upgrades
Most 24i boats on the market come with a heating system, a short-handed setup and an autopilot as commonly fitted gear. Often-seen upgrades include solar panels and lithium batteries for house energy, plus a gennaker or asymmetric spinnaker for downwind speed, electric winches, a dodger, teak decks and a chartplotter. For the buyer, the energy cluster means longer autonomous stays aboard without shore power, while the sail-handling cluster turns an already planing hull into a more capable light-air cruiser; a dodger and teak add comfort and a certain look without changing the essential unsinkable package.
What to Inspect
The one documented mechanical watch item is the rudder bearings: if there is any slop, the bushes need replacement rudder bearings need new bushes if there is any slop. Otherwise the foam-filled construction should be checked for its stated ability to keep the boat afloat and sail-able if flooded, and the backstayless rig’s deck arch and bulkhead should be sound since they take the compression loads. The cockpit sole hinge on inboard diesels is the path to the Yanmar 1GM and is worth working open to confirm engine access.
Availability and Buyer's Takeaway
These boats typically appear in the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Ireland, Austria and the Netherlands. For a buyer, the short list is: confirm keel type and draft against your mooring; check rudder bearing slop and renew bushes if needed; verify the foam integrity and deck arch compression path; decide inboard diesel access versus outboard stowage; and weigh the commonly fitted heater, autopilot and short-handed setup against often-added solar, lithium and downwind sails.
