The Comar Comet 12 emerged in 1983 as Andrea Vallicelli’s first design for the Comar yard, a 12.63meter cruising sloop conceived in the same year Australia took the America’s Cup. Drawn with a 10.75meter waterline and a 3.9meter beam, she carried 7.5 tonnes of displacement and a 2.10meter draft, and her 95.7 square meters of sail on a sloop rig marked her as a serious offshore cruiser rather than a weekend coastal toy. Within a decade she had become a commercial success with more than 200 examples built, closing out the first generation of the Comet line that had opened with the Comet 910 in 1971.

Comar Comet 12 Buyer's Guide

Shopping the brokerage market for a Comar Comet 12 means looking at a 12.63-meter Vallicelli-designed cruising sloop that sold more than 200 examples in its first decade, so the boat is no rarity. Most used examples are owner three-cabin layouts, though the two-cabin 420 ST version with a single large aft owner’s cabin also turns up, and ex-charter boats are a common sight.

Layouts on the Used Market

The standard Comet 12 carries three cabins: two aft doubles with their own bathrooms and a forward V-berth cabin around a large dinette. The 420 ST, born of the 1987 restyling, drops the twin aft cabins for one big owner’s cabin and reads as a two-cabin boat. Either way the low deckhouse with its conical section and several skylights gives the saloon good light and airflow, and the wide, deep transom is a consistent feature.

Equipment and Common Upgrades

Spinnakers are commonly fitted on these boats, a logical match for the sloop’s 95.7 square meters of sail area and racing-derived drift plane. Hot water is also a common factory or early refit item, worth confirming in any ex-charter hull where system wear is a concern. Beyond those, buyers should treat rig and canvas additions as owner-level variables rather than standard equipment.

What to Inspect

The underbody is the headline item: the Comet 12 has a typical racing drift plane with an elliptical bulb and a rudder blade carrying no skeg anchor. That skegless rudder deserves close inspection for bearing wear or impact damage, since there is no skeg to shield it. The hull itself was built in line with IOR standards, so check the usual IOR-era concerns around the rudder stock and the deep, wide transom junction for stress. The 2.10-meter draft also means a survey of the bulb and keel root is prudent.

Availability and Buyer's Takeaway

These boats are typically found in Italy and Croatia. For a shopper, the checklist is straightforward: confirm which layout (three-cabin standard or two-cabin 420 ST) suits your plans, verify hot water and spinnaker condition, and give the skegless rudder and IOR-pattern hull a careful survey. Ex-charter examples are common, so factor in higher cycle counts on systems and rigging.
