Buying a used Comar: read the ownership line, not just the model name

A used Comar carries two distinct identities under one badge. The yard that built the Comet 910, 850, and 12 in Forlì through the 1970s and 80s was a different company, in a legal sense, from the one Massimo and Flavia Guardigli built up from Fiumicino starting in the mid-1990s — the badge outlasted a bankruptcy: the original company folded, and the Guardigli-era Comar rebuilt from just the brand and molds, purchased from the receiver appointed to the failed company. That discontinuity matters more for a used-boat buyer than the name on the transom: condition, refit history, and which era a hull comes from will tell you more than the badge alone.

Which era to target

The earliest boats — the Van de Stadt/Finot-designed Comet 910 and its Finot-, Peterson-, and Vallicelli-drawn successors through the 1980s — are Forlì-built, pre-Guardigli hulls from the yard's early racing and one-design period. The Genesi 43 sits right on that ownership seam: it entered production in 1992 and stayed in the lineup until 2001, spanning the change of hands, so a used example needs its build year checked against which era actually built it rather than assumed from the model name alone. Guardigli-era boats built from Fiumicino — the Sport, Raised Saloon, and Smart lines, and the C-Cat catamarans launched in 2015 — reflect the yard's modern build standard: Corecell-core sandwich hulls and decks in carbon or glass, a 60-degree postcure cycle, and stainless-steel-caged, lead-antimony keels. A boat's construction details are a reasonable proxy for which side of that ownership line it falls on.

Comar's range splits broadly into monohulls — the Sport, Raised Saloon, and Smart lines spanning roughly 21 to 100 feet — and, since 2015, the C-Cat catamaran line anchored by the Marc Lombard-designed C-Cat 37 and the larger C-Cat 65. Buyers set on racing pedigree will gravitate toward the Sport line's Vallicelli-and-Nazareth lineage; those wanting more interior volume will find it in the Raised Saloon series. The full model directory on this page breaks down the range boat by boat.
