In the late 1970s, the design office of C&C Yachts was the undisputed powerhouse of the North American racercruiser market, famed for producing elegant, heavydisplacement cruisers that prioritized interior volume and solid build quality. However, in 1977, the builder embarked on one of its most radical and polarizing experiments. The C&C Mega 30 OD (One Design) was conceived as a joint venture between Olympic medalist Peter Barrett of North Sails and C&C’s legendary president, George Cuthbertson. The mandate was to design an ultrahighperformance, trailready racercruiser that could jumpstart a competitive onedesign class. Managed by project manager Rob Mazza and engineered by Rob Ball’s C&C Design Group, the Mega 30 OD discarded traditional yacht aesthetics in favor of a narrow, planinghull shape and a retractable bulb keel. Built in Canada, the United States, and Germany, the Mega 30 was a design decades ahead of its time, anticipating the modern "sportboat" era.
