The C&C 27 Mk III sits within the longestrunning and bestselling design lineage C&C Yachts ever produced. Across more than two decades the C&C 27 became the marque's most successful model by a wide margin, with nearly 1,000 hulls built over a production span exceeding a decade overwhelmingly its most successful design. The Mk III itself ran from 1974 to 1981, the third of four evolutionary editions that began with drawings completed by project manager Rob Ball in 1970.

C&C 27 Mk III Buyer's Guide

The C&C 27 Mk III occupies a sweet spot in the used market for small coastal cruiser-racers: the third of four C&C 27 editions, built from 1974 to 1981. It carries the evolved hull and rig of a proven line that nearly reached 1,000 units across all marks, so examples are findable in the regions where the brand sold strongest.

Layouts on the Used Market

Every Mk III preserves the same basic interior as the earlier marks, with only smoked acrylic port lights and minor detailing changed. Expect a standing-headroom cabin: V-berth forward, head and hanging locker just aft, dinette to port, settee to starboard, and a compact galley with sink and stove just inside the companionway opposite an icebox. Cockpit benches run long and straight nearly to the wide transom. The hull was stretched six inches in the cockpit and stern area versus prior editions, but beam is unchanged and volume remains concentrated in the settee and dinette space.

Equipment and Common Upgrades

Hot water and a bimini are commonly fitted on brokerage boats, speaking to their role as weekenders rather than bare racers. Wheel steering appeared as a 1975 option and diesel power as a 1978 Yanmar option, with the single-cylinder Yanmar SYP 12 becoming standard near the end of the run; many survivors will still show the original Atomic 4 gasoline engine. Buyers should note that the boat was really designed for tiller steering, and the wheel option narrows cockpit passage.

What to Inspect

The keel cannot support hull weight, so confirm a strong, elaborate winter cradle was used rather than blocking on the keel alone keel cannot support the hull weight. On wheel-steered examples, check that the cockpit foot well's narrowness forces the helmsman onto the seats to reach the wheel. Aged topsides often fade and many hulls have been repainted; budget refinishing if unpainted. The rubber liner for the port lights is prone to weather-checking and leakage, so test those seals.

Availability and Buyer's Takeaway

The typical markets are the United States and Canada. When viewing a Mk III, confirm the rig height and sail-area increase are present, verify diesel or Atomic 4 status, and inspect port-light rubbers and topside finish.

  • Confirm winter storage used a proper cradle, not keel blocking
  • Test port-light rubbers for leaks and weathering
  • Budget for topside refinishing if gelcoat is faded
  • Decide tiller versus wheel steering tolerance before purchase
  • Verify Mk III production run from 1974 to 1981
