Boreal 47.2 Buyer's Guide
Built as an all-aluminum shallow-draught expedition centreboarder by Boréal, the 47.2 was drawn by Jean-François Delvoye and emerged as the refined successor absorbing owner input from the 44 and 47. On the brokerage market you are looking at a modern aluminium centreboarder built for global cruising, with the rugged construction and layout features that define the class rather than a stripped racer.
Layouts on the Used Market
The 47.2 carries a deck saloon and doghouse with protected visibility, and the saloon is offset to port with the galley to starboard in a linear arrangement anchor. Forward, the owner's cabin has a wider peninsula bed than the previous generation and a larger ensuite with a separate shower stall, while the bed base lifts on gas struts for deep stowage anchor. Aft, the two cabins were offered as doubles or twins, and the smaller starboard side can instead be a technical and storage area anchor. On deck, expect a cavernous forward sail locker and a massive lazarette with twin openings, plus foredeck space for a stowed inflated tender anchor.
Equipment and Common Upgrades
Power and energy center on the Volvo Penta D2 engine, with the standard 50hp often upgraded to 60 or 75hp; the test boat's 75hp drove a fixed three-blade prop anchor. Flexible solar panels of 500W were fitted on the doghouse and coachroof, and two 13kg gas bottles sit in a cockpit-accessed locker anchor. For sail handling, the optional laminate full-batten mainsail with Antal track appeared on the test boat, and the standard twin bow roller and sprit takes anchors and Code sails via an optional bowsprit anchor. Cold-storage provisions include the two-drawer fridge with an extra freezer available in the starboard aft cabin, and the galley also had paired foot pumps for salt and backup pressurized water anchor.
What to Inspect
The known construction points worth checking start with the full aluminum hull and the keel "embryo" — the shallow 80cm-wide vestigial keel that houses the centreboard case, tankage, and lead ballast and forms the drying base anchor. Confirm the watertight bulkheads and the full-height watertight door sealing the doghouse from the cockpit are intact, since these define the boat's claimed safety envelope anchor. The 8–10mm bottom plating on substantial framing should be surveyed for previous grounding damage given the beaching capability, and the centreboard and rudder hydrodynamic profiles checked for wear anchor. Substantial aluminium stanchions and welded handholds should show no mixed-metal corrosion, and the below-deck windlass and concealed anchor-ride channel need inspection for fouling anchor.
Availability and Buyer's Takeaway
For a buyer, the practical checklist is: verify aluminium hull and keel-embryo integrity including centreboard case; test the watertight door and bulkheads; confirm engine option and propeller type; check solar, freezer, and galley pump fit-out; and assess aft-cabin configuration for your cruising style.
