Beneteau Oceanis 423 Buyer's Guide
Shopping the brokerage market for a Beneteau 423 means choosing between two interior plans on a 42-foot Groupe Finot cruiser that has proven versatile enough for hardcore voyagers and casual weekenders alike. Ex-charter examples are common, and the boat's reputation for sensible construction and low maintenance burden makes it a frequent candidate for extended cruising fit-outs. Both the two-cabin and three-cabin versions share the same forward cabin, forward head, dining area, aft head, and engine compartment, so the used buyer's real choice is about how that volume aft is divided.
Layouts on the Used Market
Owner three-cabin layouts are the more common on the used market, but both are available. The three-cabin version has two essentially identical big-berth cabins on either side aft and its galley along the port side opposite the dinette, with a nav desk to starboard. The two-cabin model features a single aft cabin to port with even more mattress area than the three-cabin version and a large galley aft to starboard that testers found a better arrangement for preparing food while under way. Both layouts place the owner's stateroom forward with a centerline double and an ensuite head with separate stall shower, and both include a second head aft to port. The saloon in either version is spacious, with a U-shaped dinette to starboard and a settee opposite, though the interior is pushed to the hull sides at the cost of locker depth.
Equipment and Common Upgrades
On the used market, chartplotter, bimini, autopilot, dodger, furling main, electric winches, radar, and heating are commonly fitted. Often seen additions include solar, inverter, cockpit shower, teak decks, spinnaker, life raft, hot water, swim platform, AIS, and bow thruster. Less commonly seen are air conditioning, freezer, asymmetric spinnaker, and watermaker, which typically appear as owner upgrades rather than factory standard. The standard boat itself carried a Volvo 55-hp diesel, Lewmar primaries and coachroof winches, a three-burner Force Ten stove, and 12-volt front-and top-loading refrigeration, so many examples will already show a layered equipment profile from successive owners.
What to Inspect
Documented known issues from period tests are limited but worth a look. Most floorboards in the tested boat were screwed down, which can complicate access to systems below. The batteries were set right in front of the engine without a cover, so check whether a cover has since been added to prevent a dropped tool from contacting terminals. The aft head was found snug for a person of average build, and the side deck gets a little narrow approaching the cockpit. The bilge is too shallow to be of much use for storage, and the saloon's lack of locker depth is inherent to the hull-side interior push rather than a sign of modification.
Availability and Buyer's Takeaway
Typical markets for the 423 include the United States, Greece, Italy, the United Kingdom, Croatia, and Malta. For the shopper, the checklist is short and sourced from the boat's documented traits: confirm which of the two or three-cabin layouts suits your plans, verify the galley location and sea-keeping arrangement, inspect floorboard fastening and battery coverage at the engine, and assess aft-head width and side-deck narrowing personally. With a quiet efficient diesel, led-aft sail controls, and a CE Offshore A hull, the 423 remains a sensible used-cruiser candidate.
