Beneteau Oceanis 473 Buyer's Guide
The Beneteau Oceanis 473 on the brokerage market is a Groupe Finot–designed, Beneteau-built cruiser launched in 2000, with production running through 2005. Ex-charter examples are common, and owner three-cabin layouts are the more prevalent of the two configurations available, though both turn up. Shoppers will find a beamy 47-foot hull with a vast cockpit and twin wheels, easy power handling, and a layout whose aft cabins trade some galley space for volume.
Layouts on the Used Market
The 473 came in two principal layouts. The three-cabin owner version shows mirror-image double quarter berths aft that look huge, with the starboard cabin intruding into the galley and forcing the stove against a bulkhead — leaving limited counter space and virtually no lazarette. The forward stateroom is roomy with its own head and shower. A two-cabin or four-cabin version also existed per period specs, but the three-cabin owner boat is the more common used-market face of the model, while ex-charter examples of various layouts are frequently listed. Both galleys show minimal reefer space regardless of arrangement.
Equipment and Common Upgrades
Commonly fitted gear on used 473s includes chartplotter, radar, autopilot, inverter, solar, electric winches, life raft, swim platform, and cockpit shower, alongside a bimini. For buyer consequence, the meaningful clusters are power and energy — inverter, solar, and often a generator stowed in a cockpit locker on test boats — and canvas and sail handling, where electric winches and a bimini lead the field. Navigation commonly shows chartplotter and radar. Less universal but often seen are teak decks, bow thruster, AIS, dodger, dinghy davits, air conditioning, freezer, and watermaker. A bow thruster was an option from new and is a frequent aid given the heavy twin-wheel helm.
What to Inspect
The twin-wheel steering is the first thing to check: Yachting World found the arrangement adds friction and leaves a heavy helm that at times lacks feel anchor. The mainsheet is positioned out of reach of the helmsman, a handling quirk to confirm in person. In the three-cabin layout, inspect the galley compromise closely — the stove hard against a bulkhead, minimal counters, and no lazarette. Reefer space looked minimal in both galley layouts, so verify actual cold-storage volume against your needs. Otherwise the hull shows truncated ends and a very wide stern; check the recessed foredeck windlass well and the seven low-profile forward hatches for seal condition.
Availability and Buyer's Takeaway
These boats typically appear in the United States, Greece, Antigua and Barbuda, the British Virgin Islands, Türkiye, and Spain. For a buyer, the short checklist is: confirm which layout and whether ex-charter; test the steering feel and friction at both wheels; verify galley and reefer practicality in the three-cabin version; check bow thruster and generator installation; and inspect all deck hatches and the windlass well. The 473 rewards the shopper who values a huge, secure cockpit and enormous aft berths over a sprawling galley.
