The Swan 532, also called the Swan 53 Mk II, is a Finnish sailboat designed by Germán Frers as a blue water cruiser and built by Oy Nautor AB in Finland. First built in 2005, the design was originally marketed simply as the Swan 53 before later being distinguished as the 532 or Mk II to separate it from Frers' unrelated 1987 Swan 53 Mk I. Twenty were completed before the boat went out of production, and its hull was subsequently developed into the Swan 54. Nautor's long association with Frers, who became the marque's principal designer in the early 1980s, places this 54foot cruiser squarely in the mature phase of the builder's glassfibre production era.

Swan 53-2 Buyer's Guide

The Swan 53-2, also known as the Swan 53 Mk II, is a Finnish blue water cruiser designed by Germán Frers and built by Oy Nautor AB, with production starting in 2005 and twenty hulls completed before the design went out of production. As the successor label to the unrelated 1987 Swan 53 Mk I, the 53-2 shares its hull with the later Swan 54, making it a compact entry into Frers' mature Nautor cruising lineage for anyone shopping the used market.

Layouts on the Used Market

Every Swan 53-2 offers sleeping for eight, so buyer choice turns on cabin configuration rather than capacity. The bow cabin pairs a double island berth with a port-side double, and two aft cabins each hold a double berth — a four-cabin arrangement that suits either family cruising or two couples with private heads. The main cabin's L-shaped and straight settees provide daytime living space without blocking the central corridor. The galley is on the starboard side just forward of the companionway ladder as an L-shaped station with a three-burner stove, ice box, and double sink, while three heads are split as two starboard units aft of the bow cabin and one port-side aft. Keel choice is the variable: a fixed fin keel or an optional stub keel and daggerboard, the latter demanding closer survey attention.

Equipment and Common Upgrades

The baseline fit centers on a Japanese Yanmar diesel for docking and manoeuvring, and a conventional masthead sloop with twin swept-spreader sets that may carry a symmetrical spinnaker for downwind sailing. For a buyer, the consequential upgrade clusters are sail-handling and offwind capability — a spinnaker fit and any shorthanded rigging changes matter more than creature comforts — and the L-shaped galley's fixed three-burner and double sink define the food-prep envelope regardless of owner additions.

What to Inspect

The principal survey point is the keel configuration. Hulls delivered with the optional stub keel and daggerboard introduce a penetration through the hull bottom absent on fin-keel boats, so the trunk and board warrant close examination. Otherwise the glassfibre hull with wood trim should be surveyed as a conventional solid-GRP Nautor cruiser, with attention to the dual-wheel spade rudder linkage and the internally mounted rudder stock.

Availability and Buyer's Takeaway

With twenty built and the design out of production, the Swan 53-2 is infrequent on the used market. For a shopper, the short checklist is: confirm keel type and inspect the daggerboard trunk if fitted; verify the Yanmar auxiliary and dual-wheel steering; check the three-head, four-cabin layout against your cruising plan; and treat the shared Swan 54 hull as a positive lineage marker rather than a substitute for survey.
