The Swan 45 arrived as the smallest yacht Nautor had built in some years and was positioned from the first hull as a onedesign class cruiserracer rather than a bespoke bluewater cruiser. German Frers, already Swan's principal designer for over two decades by then, drew her as the progeny of the hightech, lightdisplacement Swan 70 and 80, and she carries that family's appetite for nautical miles whether the owner is racing or simply covering ground offshore. She took the 2002 Boat of the Show award at the London Boat Show and Sailing World Magazine's Boat of the Year 2003, and she remains a ClubSwan One Design division boat whose class philosophy exists to constrain running costs and reward owners with pleasurable competition.

Swan 45 Buyer's Guide

Shopping the used market for a Swan 45 means taking home a one-design class cruiser-racer that Nautor built from 2001 through 2010, with fifty hulls produced. Germán Frers drew her as the small sibling of the light-displacement Swan 70 and 80, and the class rules keep running costs contained while rewarding owner-driven competition. What you find ashore will vary in fit and finish because Nautor kept some degree of individual choice for owners regarding deck hardware and fit out rather than enforcing a strict one-design route.

Layouts on the Used Market

The 45 was offered with three interior styles, so used boats differ below in arrangement rather than in hull or rig. The cockpit is flat and roomy with a 60-inch wheel and a starboard wet locker abaft the nav station. Decks are teak-paved and the transom may be open or carry the cruising drop-in closure. A balsa-cored deck and topsides sit over a carbon-reinforced solid bottom, and the cabin trunk is higher and softer than earlier midsize Swans.

Equipment and Common Upgrades

Teak decks, an asymmetric spinnaker, a freezer and a chartplotter are commonly fitted, and many boats also carry a spinnaker, AIS, life raft, inverter, dodger and radar. Less common but seen as owner upgrades are heating, lithium batteries, a code zero, electric winches, hot water and autopilot. For a buyer, the chartplotter and radar with AIS form the navigation baseline, while the freezer and inverter speak to longer independent cruising; a code zero or electric winches are bonus performance items rather than expected standard gear.

What to Inspect

Two new boats snapped their rudders at the Swan Cup in Sardinia when the carbon rudder stocks failed on downwind wipeouts above 20 knots. Nautor analyzed the breaks at its VTT Helsinki facility and issued higher-specification carbon stocks, so confirm any candidate carries the post-analysis rudder stock. The only other modification across the class since launch was an upgraded mainsheet traveller, worth verifying is present. A period tester also flagged the absence of a foot brace on the sole beside the helm when heeled hard, a comfort and safety point to evaluate on a sail trial.

Availability and Buyer's Takeaway

These yachts typically appear in Spain, Croatia, the Netherlands, the United States and Italy. For the buyer, the short checklist is: confirm the rudder stock is the upgraded VTT-spec carbon, verify the mainsheet traveller upgrade, decide whether the open transom or cruising closure suits your plans, and assess the three interior styles against your cruising versus racing balance.
