Sirius 26 Buyer's Guide
The Sirius 26 is a Streuer-designed German sloop built by Sirius-Werft GmbH between 1973 and 1988, with 260 hulls produced across fixed-fin and swing-keel configurations. Shopping a used Sirius 26 today means choosing between the standard 1.25-meter fin model and the 0.75-to-1.32-meter swing-keel version, each with its own trailering and grounding implications, and checking a few well-known weak points before any survey.
What to Inspect
The iron fin keel is the first place to spend time at a viewing. On a fixed-keel hull, look at the keel-to-hull joint for rust staining, bubbled paint, or softness around the fastenings, and tap the keel with a mallet to hear for hollow rust pockets inside the iron. A swing-keel boat avoids that specific joint but introduces a centerboard trunk, so inspect the trunk sides for cracks and the pivot bolt for corrosion.
The balsa-cored deck demands a careful walk and sounding. Press firmly around winches, stanchion bases, and the forward coach-roof edge — especially on the 20 wood-coach-roof boats with teak decks — and listen for a dull note that signals rotted core. Any softness or discoloration near a fitting is a red flag for moisture migration into the balsa.
Weather helm is a handling note rather than a defect: the boat will usually heel to about 25 degrees and then develop a very strong weather helm, so on a sea trial watch whether the tiller loads up abruptly and whether the owner reefs early. Strong helm at that angle is expected, not a fault.
Engine installations varied, with Farymann/Bukh diesels and later Volvo Penta or Beta Marine shaft-drive units reported, so confirm which powerplant is in the hull and whether its spares are still obtainable before committing.
Availability and Buyer's Takeaway
Treat availability as a matter of watching general brokerage listings rather than a known strong region.
- Confirm fin or swing keel and inspect the relevant joint or trunk
- Sound the balsa deck around every deck penetration
- Verify the installed engine make and spares path
- Sail her to 20 degrees and note the helm load
