What to Inspect
The iron fin keel is the first place to spend time at a viewing. On a fixed-keel hull, look at the keel-to-hull joint for rust staining, bubbled paint, or softness around the fastenings, and tap the keel with a mallet to hear for hollow rust pockets inside the iron. A swing-keel boat avoids that specific joint but introduces a centerboard trunk, so inspect the trunk sides for cracks and the pivot bolt for corrosion.
The balsa-cored deck demands a careful walk and sounding.
