The Pearson 39-2, introduced in 1986, represents the sophisticated culmination of William Shaw’s design philosophy during the final chapter of the original Pearson Yachts era. Often confused with the earlier, narrow-beamed Pearson 39 designed by William Tripp in the 1970s, the 39-2 is an entirely different vessel, engineered to meet the growing demand for "performance cruisers" that could balance club racing speed with the creature comforts of a modern home. Built in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, the 39-2 features a more contemporary silhouette than its predecessors, with a nearly vertical transom and a generous beam carried well aft, a signature of Shaw’s later work intended to maximize interior volume and stability.
