The Tartan 34-2, introduced in 1984, stands as a pivotal design in the evolution of Tartan Yachts, marking a departure from the International Offshore Rule (IOR) influenced shapes of the 1970s toward a more modern, performance-oriented cruising philosophy. Designed by Tim Jackett, who would go on to define the brand’s modern identity, the 34-2 was tasked with a difficult objective: succeeding the legendary Sparkman & Stephens-designed Tartan 34 Classic. While the older "Classic" was a narrow-beamed, heavy-displacement centerboarder, the 34-2 embraced a wider beam carried well aft, a longer waterline, and more sophisticated underwater appendages. This model proved to be a success for the Ohio builder, with production running through 1989 and totaling approximately 100 hulls.
