The Paine Apogee 50 is a fast offshore cruiser designed by Chuck Paine, and the example documented by Practical Sailor—Skip and Ilze Sims’ Scoots—was launched in 1994 as the second hull in the series built by Able Marine. With a 51foot overall length including the sugar scoop stern, a 45.8foot waterline, 14foot beam, and a designed draft of just 6 feet, the boat was drawn with a fairly straight sheerline and the maximum waterline length available without the ends looking. She is uncluttered and modern in appearance, with nearly flush decks and a lowslung pilothouse, and the only exterior wood is in the cockpit—teak coamings and sole that the owner accepted only because the boat was bound for show displays.

Paine Apogee 50 Buyer's Guide

The Paine Apogee 50 is a Chuck Paine–designed performance cruiser built by Able Marine, with nine vessels in the original run and tooling later owned by Morris Yachts. A used Paine Apogee 50 such as *Scoots* shows the breed’s essential character: a 51-foot hull with sugar scoop, low pilothouse, and flush decks intended for serious offshore short-handed use. Shoppers will find a boat whose documented strengths and weaknesses are consistent across the small series, and whose equipment reflects two decades of owner refinement.

Layouts on the Used Market

The Apogee 50’s interior is big and open, with only two sleeping cabins—a large owner’s cabin forward for in-port use and a smaller quarter cabin for use at sea—plus a single large head aft near the companionway. The pilothouse gives two out-of-weather seats, chart space, and primary instrumentation; a lowered cockpit sole preserves standing headroom without raising the deck. Forward of a watertight bulkhead is a storage “garage” for spare sails, dinghy, lines, and anchor chains. Aft, the engine space is behind another watertight bulkhead with a custom door, and includes a workbench with a compact drill press.

Equipment and Common Upgrades

Used Paine Apogee 50s commonly carry life raft, heating, lithium batteries, radar, dodger, autopilot, inverter, Starlink, electric winches, freezer, AIS, EPIRB, asymmetric spinnaker, spinnaker, solar, Bimini, chartplotter, short-handed setup, teak decks, furling main, air conditioning, and watermaker. Hot water and cockpit shower are often seen. A radar arch with centerline Furuno scanner and rigid-framed Bimini protecting the aft cockpit—later additions on Scoots—blend well and commonly appear, frequently with a solar array atop. Gennaker and dinghy davits are less common, generally owner upgrades. The documented boat used a small Kubota diesel driving a 200-amp alternator and watermaker pump in place of a generator.

What to Inspect

The lower companionway dropboards need to be kept in place in heavy weather to block the companionway up to the main deck level, so check the boards and sealing surfaces. With two masthead stays, it is impossible to get adequate headstay tension for heavy-air upwind sailing because each stay carries roughly half the load; inspect both furler installations. When using the headsail on the outer furler, the sail must be rolled up most of the way for tacking. Fin keels, exposed prop installations and spade rudders have a real propensity for grabbing fishnets and other lines—verify the stainless steel line deflector and Spurs cutters ahead of the Max-Prop feathering propeller are present and intact.

Availability and Buyer's Takeaway

Apogee 50s are found in the United States. For a shopper, the essentials are: confirm watertight bulkheads fore and aft are sound; verify the companionway dropboard fit; check twin-stay furler condition and tacking behavior; confirm line deflector and prop shaft cutters are fitted; review the pilothouse and sugar-scoop liferaft access; and assess whether the minimal two-cabin, single-head layout suits the intended use.
