When Capital Yachts of Harbor City, California, introduced the Newport 27 S in 1974, it represented a strategic refinement of their highly successful 1971 debut, the Newport 271 2. Designed by the premier Canadian naval architecture team of George Cuthbertson and George Cassian—the creative forces behind C&C Yachts—the Newport 27 S was engineered to strike an exact balance between competitive local club racing and familyfriendly weekend cruising. During the fiberglass boatbuilding boom of the 1970s, this model carved out a distinct reputation by competing headtohead with iconic pocket cruisers like the Catalina 27, the Cal 27, and the O'Day 27. While many of its peers sacrificed interior volume to achieve lowslung, sleek profiles, the Newport 27 S famously prioritized vertical living space. By utilizing a raised flush deck configuration, C&C Design managed to carve out over six feet of standing headroom inside—an extraordinary design feat for a twentysevenfoot vessel of that era. This makes the interior cabin remarkably commodious, featuring a warm, traditional aesthetic defined by a liberal use of oiled teak bulkheads and joinery, contrasted with practical, easytoclean woodgrain Formica horizontal surfaces.
